The third Surrey XC League match took place at Oxshott Woods and was hosted by Elmbridge Road Runners. Freezing temperatures saw a distinct reluctance among E&E’s ten runners to ditch the final layer before hot footing it to the start line! The undulating course wound its way through the wintery woodland with some pronounced roots, mid-path tree stumps and the infamous hill making for testing conditions.
Team Performance:
- Epsom & Ewell fielded two full teams with the A team coming a resounding first in Division 2; a whole 35 points clear of Reigate in second.
- Epsom & Ewell also ranked second in the B team category after Wimbledon Windmilers.
Notable Performances:
- Sophie Glencross (U20) was 3rd overall, clearly drawing from her recent Oxford Uni varsity experience and making light work of the hilly terrain.
- Sophie Lomas was still full of beans after her phenomenal 8th place finish at Surrey’s XC Champs the previous weekend and finished 4th overall.
- The A team was completed by Annie Snowball (U20) in 19th, Nicky Stevenson (V45) in 21st and Lily Brown (U20) in 28th.
- Nicky Stevenson was 5th in the V45-54 category in a fantastic time of 34:40.
Summary:
- After three of four matches, Epsom & Ewell are sitting 3rd in Division 2.
- Annie Snowball leads the U20 category.
- While Reigate Priory and Vets AC battle for the season win, there’s some jostling for the coveted 3rd place promotion spot with E&E a mere 16 points ahead of Clapham Pioneers and 21 points ahead of Wimbledon Windmilers. It’s all to play for at the final fixture in Lloyd Park!
