Surrey XC Championships, Denbies, 4 January 2026

The Surrey XC Championships took place at the scenic Denbies Vineyard in icy conditions on a bright sunny day.

The highlight of the day was an historic team bronze for the senior women’s team led by a trio of young athletes. Anna Bloomfield gave a up a likely individual medal in the U20 race to compete against the seniors and produced an excellent performance to claim 6th place. With great support from first year seniors Sophie Lomas (8th) and Brooke Taylor (11th), and Nicky Stevenson (39th) who closed the team, the squad secured the Club’s first senior women’s team medal in the Surrey Championships for at least 30 years.

The future looks very bright as the U20 Women’s team secured an excellent team gold with solid packing from Sophie Glencross (5th), Lola Williams (7th) and Lily Brown (12th). 

Another young athlete led the senior men home with George Hannay producing a fine run to finish 47th and lead a team comprising largely of Masters (over 35) athletes to a solid 8th position in the team rankings. 

Despite losing a lot of athletes to illness, the Club’s junior runners were still out in force and there were lots of great performances. Lucy Pennington (12th) and Alfie Thorpe (15th) led the girls and boys U13 teams to excellent 4th and 5th place finishes respectively against very strong opposition. There were also strong top 20 finishes for Alyssa Codrington (14th U17W), Seb Smith (14th U15 Boys) and Lola Galbraith (18th U15 Girls).
