Surrey League, Lloyd Park, 5 March 2022
There was a cold wind blowing at Lloyd Park for the final Surrey League match and with mud reminiscent of Parliament Hill the going was very tough but there were some amazing performances.
The individual highlights included fantastic victories for Lily Brown in the u15G’s race and Gabby Ceccherini in the u17W’s race. Lily led the u15 girls to second on the day with Zara Girling 4th, Florence White 11th and Darcey Mitchell 24th The team also finished second overall in the league, missing out to Herne Hill by just 22 points. Special mention to Rose Taylor who completed the race despite a bad fall early on the first lap.

Sophie Desmond, Sophie Lomas, Riona Stockley and Matilda Laidlaw packed brilliantly to fill places 10th to 13th as the B team finished 3rd on the day and 3rd in the league. There were also fine runs in the u13Gs race by Matilda Kotcheff 13th and Charlotte Coleman 22nd.
Despite a nasty fall, Dan Slaven led home the combined u15B/u17M team in 4th with Elliott Manning 12th (6th u15B), Dan Simpson 16th (10th U15B) and Oli Corner 23rd combining to take 3rd team on the day (just 14 points behind winners Reigate) and 2nd in the league. Harvey O’Shea finished 4th in the u13B race and led the team to 4th in a tight race with great support form Tom Holland 7th, Jacob Duke 18th and Lucas Wilkins 24th, as the team secured 3rd place in the league. There was also a great debut by Zachary Wilson who finished 25th.
Congratulations to the ladies team of Lauren Johnson 46th, Charlotte Arkwright 48th (6th U20), Louise Harold 57th, Sandra Newbury 86th and Julie Houghton 111th who held off Wimbledon Windmilers to secure their place in Division 1 with a much depleted team.

Surrey XC Championships, Denbies Vineyard, 9 January 2022
Denbies Vineyard in Dorking provided the picturesque backdrop for the 2022 Surrey Cross-Country Championships. A beautiful crisp sunny day made for excellent spectating while the recent rain meant there was plenty of mud in addition to the usual hills to make it a proper test of endurance for the competitors.
Harriers enjoyed one of their most successful championships for many years. The individual highlight was provided by Henry Smith who ran a well judged race to move through the field and claim an excellent bronze in the u20 Men’s race. This was the only category where Harriers were unable to field a full team but there was plenty of team success elsewhere.
Despite being hard hit by illness, the u15 girls squad showed their depth of quality. Lily Brown led the team home with an excellent run following a week of quarantine due to Covid to finish 11th and excellent packing by Libby Cantwell (14th), Florence White (20th) and Isla Naidoo (21st) secured a team silver. Darcey Mitchell also produced a fine run to finish 29th.
There was further medal success with the u13 and u15 boys teams both winning bronzes. For the U13s, Harvey O’Shea (7th) and Tom Holland (8th) produced strong runs to put themselves into contention for places on the Surrey team for the UK Inter-Counties Championships in March. They were backed up well by Daniel Street (24th) and Jacob Duke (26th), with Erik Bertheussen (28th) just missing out on the scoring team. Sammy Taylor (11th) led home the u15 boys with Elliot Manning (15th), Benjy Carr (18th) and Dan Simpson (20th) packing well to secure the team bronze.
