Surrey Road Relays, Wimbledon, 4 September 2021
Great running by our senior teams at the Surrey Road Relays. The Senior Women finished a fine 8th and the mix of youth and experience in the Senior Men’s team finished a creditable 12th.
The combined time of the vet 40s in our senior team of 1:09.13 would have claimed a comfortable bronze in the over 40 relay, only 15 seconds off the silver, so we can claim an honorary medal!

Downs League, Morden Park, 25 April 2021
The second and final XC race of the 2020/21 winter season was the Downs League meeting in the unfamiliar surroundings of Morden Park.
Despite the lack of racing over the winter, all the Harriers performed exceptionally well with the u13 girls, u13 boys and u15 boys teams all winning. The u15 girls finished second, the u11 boys were 3rd and the u11 girls 5th. The brilliant results included:
* An amazing sprint finish in the u13 girls race as Florence White held on for a tight win from Estee Norman (2nd), and great support by Isla Naidoo (7th) and Libby Cantwell (8th) was enough to hold off a strong Herne Hill Harriers. Isabel Cahill-Sanford also had a fine run for 12th, with Matilda Kotcheff (27th) on her debut, Eliza Smith (34th) and Alice Smalley (35th).
* The win was matched by the u13 boys with Benjy Carr first home in second, ahead of Elliott Manning (3rd), Rory Orsborn (5th) and a brilliant debut run by Harvey O’Shea (9th). There was also good support from Tom Holland (12th), Abinidab Panchalingham (14th) and Tom Harrison (24th).
* The u15 boys also took team gold with Dan Slaven leading the way home in second, and a great sprint finish by Victor Holstein claimed third. Sammy Taylor was an excellent 6th and Daniel Linney had a brilliant debut to finish 14th. He was just ahead of Tom Hook (15th) who was also making his debut and Dan Simpson (16th).
* Anna Bloomfield (7th) led home the u15 girls to 2nd team, closely followed by Poppy Mitchell (9th) and Riona Stockley (10th) and there was amazing packing by Lily Brown, Zara Girling, Grace Fordham, Chloe Royle, Sophie Glencross and Sophie Desmond who filled 14th to 19th places! Together with Matilda Laidlaw (27th), Lily Smith (33rd), Rose Taylor (34th) and Imogen Halton (36th) on her debut, we had far more runners than any other club.
* Daniel Street was first home for the u11 boys in 7th, and with good packing from Alexander King (12th), Lucas Williams (15th) and Finley Cantwell (16th), the team pipped Hercules Wimbledon for third. Cobi Bahiti (22nd), Lewis Conlon (27th) and Freddie Conlon (28th) provided good support.
* Charlotte Coleman (16th), Caria Naidoo (17th), Isabella Carville (29th) made up the scoring 3 for the u11 girls who finished 5th team, with Amelia Pocock (31st) and Evie Wooten (32nd).
Well done to everyone who ran, and thanks to all the volunteers who helped put the race on.

Thames Meander Marathon, 7 March 2020
Race report by James Thomas:
Great to travel down with Pete and join Carel, Alechia, Rob and Chris at the start. I was feeling a little nervous after tough experiences at my last two marathon distances Boston Marathon and Italy Ironman. However the body felt fit and well prepped from; the Sunday morning fast long runs with Shelly, Lou, Dave, Dave and Pete, from a great XC season, parkrun’s and the Tuesday night track sessions. This was my 6th marathon and for the first time I was doing it, not for a PB, but as a qualifier for the Comrades South Africa Ultramarathon in June. Carel and I had a plan to try and get into Pen C for which we needed to run sub-3.40.
It was lovely running conditions with 299 runners. A good briefing and we were off. Carel and I eased along comfortably at 5 minutes per K and enjoyed lovely views along the Thames towpath. The Thames and London is stunning along the course, the path guides through; lovely suburbs, green parks, past happy ramblers and waterside pubs. The surface is about half and half tarmac and dirt and after the rain there were quite a few puddles, Carel led the way XC style, taking the ‘racing line’ through the puddles.
It’s such a lovely thing to run shoulder to shoulder, feeding of the joint energy. When you have a tough K, you just grit and keep up and then it eases. The kilometres flew by, helped by good drinks stations, dutifully manned by the RAF cadets. Still running steadily at 5 min per k we got to the 21k turn around in Putney.
Running back there was a bit of a head wind, we worked a bit harder leaning into the wind. The tide was coming in and at 26k where a small river joined the Thames we elected to go straight through fording a 20 meter stretch which was up to our knees. We avoided a 500m detour, but our feet were drenched.
It was starting to hurt and at 30k our beautifully steady pace eased down to a ragged 5.20 to 5.40 per k. The sub 3.40 finish was looking tough and at 38k Carel encouraged me to push on if I could. All smoothness was gone and I ran as ragged as the mighty ‘Steve Winder’. Encouraged by Weronika cheering us on, I was able to push the last k and was mightily grateful to cross the finish line in 3.39.05 chip time (3.39.10 gun time).
Fantastically, Carel also made up time finishing in 3.39.42. Great to make our goals. I was 68 out of 294 finishers. Very happy that the hip didn’t cause any aggro, all the careful work from Naomi Lenane is working.
All the guys finished in great times and it was a happy bunch of Harriers celebrating at the finish.
