Surrey XC Relay Championships, 26 October 2019, Stoke Park, Guildford
Harriers just missed out on team medals at the Surrey Cross-Country Relay Championships at a wet and muddy Stoke Park in Guildford.
There was medal success for Florence White, however, as she brought the u13 girls team home in front on the first leg, recording 8 minutes 29 seconds for the undulating 2.5km lap which was the fastest of the race. Zara Girling was just 1 second slower as she held off the pack of 3 teams who were close behind on leg 2 and Rose Taylor (9:46) battled hard on the final leg but the team had to settle for 4th place.
The u15 girls were the final race of the day and had to contend with the worst of the conditions. Sophie Osborn got the team off to an excellent start as she finished 2nd with 8:30 for the opening lap, before handing over to Riona Stockley (8:50) and Gabby Ceccherini (8:50) who brought the team home in 4th in a high quality race. Iris Brown (8:44) finished strongly for the B team who finished an excellent 6th overall.
Alex Chapman (8:38), Finn Houston (9:02) and Patrick Moilliet (8:23) combined to finish 7th out of 17 complete teams in the u13 boys with the B team of Daniel Simpson (8:41), Finley Robinson (8:38) and Toby Stanton (9:00) close behind in 8th. Joe Barker (7:35) led the u15 boys team to an 8th place finish while u17 Kiara Valkenburg’s 8:25 lap was the 4th quickest.

Surrey League , 13 January 2018
There were a number of brilliant individual and team performances in the Surrey League fixtures.
The performance of the day at Wimbledon Common was by Sophie Lomas in the u13 girls race. She went out hard from the start and used her speed at the finish to take a brilliant 3rd place. There was also a great run by Grace Fordham in 8th, and Chloe Royle 22nd and Katie Bunyard 23rd showed that every position counts as the team pipped both Hercules Wimbledon and Guildford by just 1 point to take second place.
The u17 team were also second; the team being led home by Lauren Flack in 11th, with good support by Alice Banfield 15th, Laura Bailey 16th and Katy Webb 20th. Kiara Valkenburg was first home for the u15s in 8th place, leading the team to 4th place with Lily Pearson 22nd, Jess Winder 35th and Beth Hammond 41st.
At the same venue, Izzy Brinsden led the senior women home in 7th place but a depleted team struggled on the day and a strong performance will be needed in the final fixture on 10 February to retain the Harriers’ position in division 1.
The senior men were in action at Beckenham Place Park and despite a solid 6th place on the day, the results of other clubs weren’t helpful. The men will also need a strong showing in the final fixture as they battle to avoid relegation with only 27 points separating them from Kingston and Wimbledon.
Jake Valkenburg had a great run to finish 6th in the u13 boys race at Coulsdon and with Dan Slaven in 16th, returning to form after illness, the team took 6th place. There also a good run by Jago Green who was the only u15 in action.

There were more fabulous performances with Kiara Valkenburg taking a fine silver medal in the under 15 girls race, just failing to catch the long-time leader on the second lap of the tough 4.2km course. Conrad Norman and Sophie Lomas also secured automatic selection for the Surrey team at the Inter-Counties Championships in March by both finishing 6th in the under 13s races.
There was a brilliant team bronze for the under 13 boys with Conrad being well supported by Jake Valkenburg 16th, Joe Barker 24th and James Birbeck 52nd. And great packing by the under 13 girls team behind Sophie, with Riona Stockley 25th, Sophie Osborne 28th and Grace Fordham 29th, saw the team narrowly miss a bronze medal finishing 5th just 7 points behind Guildford & Godalming in third.
In the older age groups, Henry Smith finished strongly to take 26th in the under 15 boys. Kiara led the under 15s team to 5th place with great runs by Jasmine Peel 34th, Matilda Moore 46th and Beth Hammond 52nd. Issy Stockley ran strongly to finish 17th in the under 17 girls race and with Lauren Flack 25th and Laura Howley 28th, the team took 7th place in the combined under 17 and under 20 team race.
The final race of the day was the gruelling senior men’s 12km race and the largely veteran team took 12th with Steve Winder 63rd, Neil Henderson 72nd, Dan Wolff 97th, Stuart Flack 121st, Alastair Bloore 143rd and Andy Fay 169th.
